Tokenized Gold Explained: PAXG and XAUT vs Gold ETFs and Bullion

Tokenized gold is real: each of the two largest tokens is backed by an ounce of vaulted gold, by the issuers’ attested reports. Here is what you own, who holds the metal, what it costs next to a gold ETF or coins, how it is taxed, and what can go wrong.

Published Updated 9 min readHow we research

Key takeaways

  • Tokenized gold is a claim on vaulted gold recorded on a blockchain. The two largest tokens report one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold per token, but redeeming for metal takes 430 tokens (about $1.8 million at September 30, 2026 prices).
  • Still small: Paxos reported 435,306 PAXG on Sep 30, 2026 (about $1.82 billion, 13.5 tonnes) and Tether 612,824 XAUt sold on Jun 30, 2026 (about $2.47 billion). The SPDR Gold Trust alone held 1,055.7 tonnes.
  • On cost, PAXG sits between gold ETFs in the 5-year example (about $112 vs $50 for GLDM and $198 for GLD): no storage fee today, cash redemption from 0.125% (first $2 million in 30 days, higher tiers above; in-kind has a separate fee), plus a 1.00% purchase fee at small sizes once Paxos’s waiver ends on Jan 1, 2027. XAUt is not offered to US persons.
  • The token adds risks an ETF share at a broker does not have: the issuer can freeze tokens, smart contracts can fail, keys can be lost, and a wallet is outside SIPC. You gain 24/7 transfer and use in crypto markets.
  • Tax is unsettled for tokens: physical gold and gold ETFs face a 28% maximum long-term rate as collectibles; the IRS has not published guidance on gold tokens specifically. Check with a tax adviser.

What is tokenized gold, and is it backed by real gold?

Yes, for the two largest tokens, according to their issuers’ attested reports. Tokenized gold is a digital token on a blockchain that stands for a fixed weight of gold held in a vault. Pax Gold (PAXG) and Tether Gold (XAUt) each say one token equals one fine troy ounce of gold in London Good Delivery bars, the large bars (about 400 ounces) that banks trade. The token is how ownership is recorded and moved; the gold stays in the vault.

Paxos’s report for September 30, 2026 shows 435,306 PAXG outstanding and exactly 435,306 fine troy ounces held, and KPMG’s examination found that statement fairly presented (Paxos). Tether’s report for June 30, 2026 shows 707,747 ounces of gold held against 707,747 tokens minted, of which 612,824 had been sold to customers and the rest were held by the issuer for sale, with a reasonable-assurance report from BDO Advisory Services (Tether Gold). An attestation is a point-in-time check of one statement, not an audit of the company.

Scope: gold-backed tokens compared with physical bullion and US gold ETFs, for a US investor, as of October 26, 2026. It does not cover gold mining stocks, gold futures, or tokens that only track the gold price without metal behind them. Education, not advice; the wider picture of what a token can and cannot be is in tokenization explained.

How big is tokenized gold compared with gold ETFs?

Small. There is no official total for the category, so the figures below are issuer counts of ounces, valued at the gold price on each report date. The price is an Exent calculation from the SPDR Gold Trust’s published net asset value per ounce, which the trust sets using the LBMA Gold Price PM: $4,176.30 an ounce on September 30, 2026 and $4,026.05 on June 30, 2026.

One linear scale, gold in tonnes. PAXG outstanding tokens plus XAUt sold tokens represent about 1.05 million ounces (this excludes XAUt minted but not yet sold), roughly 3% of what GLD alone holds (the report dates differ by a quarter). Tether’s own report values the sold tokens at $2.46 billion using its price of $4,008.02; the small gap is the price source. Both tokens are growing, but the order of magnitude is what matters: tokenized gold is a niche next to the exchange-traded funds covered in GLD vs IAU vs GLDM.

What do you actually own, and who holds the gold?

You own a token whose terms give you a claim on gold held by the issuer’s custodians. Each layer is a party you depend on:

Paxos and Tether Gold reports, Sep 30 and Jun 30, 2026; SPDR Gold Trust site. Paxos converted from a New York trust company to a national trust bank on Dec 12, 2025.

Paxos says each PAXG represents an allocated ounce of London Good Delivery gold, stored with Brink’s and ICBC Standard Bank in LBMA-approved vaults. Tether Gold’s terms say each XAUt reflects “an undivided specific interest” in one ounce of its gold reserves in Switzerland, and that the issuer may reassign which bar backs your token without notice. The SPDR Gold Trust holds allocated bars at JPMorgan and HSBC, publishes a daily bar list and has the vaults counted twice a year by an inspector (SPDR Gold Shares).

What does it cost to hold $10,000 of gold for five years? A worked example

Hold the gold price flat so only costs show. Fund and token fees are the published ones above. Physical gold has no published fee, so its row uses assumptions, labelled as such: a 2% premium over spot to buy coins or small bars and 1% below spot to sell, stored at home with no insurance. Replace them with your dealer’s quotes. Hypothetical illustration, not a quote.

RouteArithmeticCost over 5 years
Coins or small bars (assumed 2% in, 1% out)$10,000 ÷ 1.02 = $9,804 of gold; × 0.99 on sale = $9,706about $294, plus storage if vaulted

  • Coins or small bars (assumptions)≈ $294

  • IAU (0.25%)≈ $124
  • PAXG via Paxos, after Jan 1, 2027≈ $112
  • GLDM (0.10%)≈ $50

The fund rows are real, not just theory: GLD’s gold per share fell from 0.09348 ounces on October 22, 2021 to 0.09165 ounces on October 23, 2026, a 1.96% loss of metal over five years, because the trust sells gold to pay its 0.40% fee (SPDR Gold Trust historical data). Three things the table leaves out: trading spreads, which can be wider for tokens on thin exchange markets; crypto network fees for every transfer; and taxes, below. A fee waiver can end, and Paxos changed its redemption schedule on September 1, 2026, so check the current page before relying on any row.

How is tokenized gold taxed in the US?

Gold token (PAXG, XAUt)A digital asset, taxed as property; whether the 28% collectibles rate applies has no published IRS answerIRS digital assets page; Notice 2023-27 (by analogy only)

The IRS treats digital assets as property, and brokers report digital-asset sales on Form 1099-DA from 2025 (IRS). For non-fungible tokens it uses a “look-through” test: an NFT that certifies ownership of a gem is itself a collectible (Notice 2023-27). Gold tokens are fungible, so that notice does not cover them directly, and whether its reasoning extends to gold tokens has not been addressed. Short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income either way. This is unsettled: ask a tax adviser before you rely on any rate. The ETF rules are explained in GLD vs IAU vs GLDM.

What can go wrong with tokenized gold?

The gold can be fine while the wrapper fails. The risks, with what each issuer’s own documents say:

The last row is the one a wrapper cannot fix. How gold behaved in past selloffs, and what a small position did to a stock portfolio, is in should I add gold to my portfolio? and is gold a good hedge?

Who is tokenized gold for, and when is it the wrong choice?

It fits people who already keep money on blockchains: crypto traders who want gold exposure without leaving the crypto system, people who need to move value outside banking hours, and non-US holders for whom a US ETF is awkward. It is also one of the few tokenized assets where you can, in principle, take delivery of the real thing, if you hold at least 430 ounces.

Counterexample: a US saver with $10,000 in a brokerage account or IRA who wants a small gold slice. A low-cost gold ETF costs less than PAXG at that size once the purchase waiver ends, sits in the existing account with SIPC custody protection, and needs no wallet. XAUt is not offered to them at all. For that investor, the token adds steps, not value. Gold’s own role next to silver and stocks is in the gold/silver ratio history.

  • Limitations: there is no official total for tokenized gold. Sizes are the two issuers’ reports on different dates (Sep 30 and Jun 30, 2026); Tether’s Sep 30 report was not yet published.
  • Gold prices here are derived from the SPDR Gold Trust’s NAV per ounce, which uses the LBMA Gold Price PM; they are close to, not identical with, the benchmark.
  • The physical-gold row uses assumed dealer premiums; real premiums vary by product, size and market conditions.
  • Not checked: where Paxos delivers bars, the name of Tether Gold’s custodian, and the tax treatment of any specific token.
  • Nothing here recommends a token, fund or dealer; read the issuer’s terms before buying.

Frequently asked questions

By Paxos’s September 30, 2026 report, examined by KPMG, 435,306 PAXG were outstanding against 435,306 fine troy ounces of London Good Delivery gold in LBMA-approved London vaults. The report is a point-in-time check, not a guarantee.

Yes, but only in whole bars: Paxos’s terms require a minimum of 430 PAXG plus fees per London Good Delivery bar, about $1.8 million at September 30, 2026 prices. Smaller holders can sell for dollars.

Not from the issuer. Tether Gold’s terms list US persons as prohibited counterparties, except Eligible Contract Participants it approves, and set a 50-token minimum purchase.

PAXG is issued by Paxos, an OCC-supervised US trust bank, with gold in London and monthly KPMG reports. XAUt is issued by TG Commodities in El Salvador, with gold in Switzerland and quarterly BDO reports, and is not offered to US persons.

It depends on size and route. In the 5-year example on $10,000, PAXG bought through Paxos after its fee waiver ends cost about $112, against $198 for GLD, $124 for IAU and $50 for GLDM.

There is no official total. The two largest tokens held about 1.05 million ounces combined on their latest reports (435,306 PAXG on Sep 30, 2026; 612,824 XAUt sold on Jun 30, 2026), roughly 3% of the SPDR Gold Trust’s 33.9 million ounces.

The IRS treats digital assets as property but has not published guidance on whether gold tokens get the 28% collectibles rate that applies to physical gold and gold ETFs. Ask a tax adviser.

Yes. Paxos’s terms let it freeze and upgrade all PAXG and require it to follow legal freeze orders; Tether Gold’s terms let it freeze tokens and blacklist addresses.
