Best Tools to Know When to Step Aside From the Market (2026)

What a good market timing tool should tell you, our pick, and the free indicator, research services and backtesters investors use to decide when to get out and when to get back in. Prices checked in October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The best tool for stepping aside gives a clear risk‑on or risk‑off reading every day from several kinds of data, alerts you when it changes and tells you when to get back in. Our pick: Exent Predictive Market Intelligence.
  • The common free option is the S&P 500’s 200‑day moving average, which any free chart shows. It gives an exit and a re‑entry, but it reads only the price trend, so it reacts after prices have fallen.
  • In Exent’s data (Jan 2017 – Sep 2026), a hypothetical 200‑day rule on the S&P 500 cut the worst fall from −33.7% to −19.2%, but also cut the return from 15.1% to 10.3% a year, with 58 switches, before costs and taxes.
  • Paid research as of October 2026: SentimenTrader lists $59 to $99 a month, 42 Macro $55 to $165 a month, and Hedgeye’s Macro Show an introductory $99 for one year. Portfolio Visualizer and testfolio backtest your own rule, with free plans.
  • Judge any timing tool by its re‑entry rule and its live record, not its best backtest: ask about trading costs, taxes, switch counts and out‑of‑sample results.

What is the best tool to know when to step aside from the market?

The best tool turns market conditions into one clear reading you can act on, and tells you when to come back in as well as when to get out. No tool can date a crash. A good one classifies the backdrop every day and warns you when it changes, so the decision is made by a rule rather than by the headlines. Look for six things:

  • A clear output: risk‑on, neutral or risk‑off, not a chart you have to interpret.
  • Updated every trading day.
  • Several families of data, not one, so a single noisy signal does not decide for you.
  • An alert when the reading changes.
  • A re‑entry signal, not only an exit.
  • An honest record: live results kept apart from backtests, with costs and taxes stated.

Our pick is Exent Predictive Market Intelligence; the other tools investors use for this job follow, grouped by type. How a tool fits into a wider plan is in the portfolio protection guide, and the decision itself is in when to step aside from the market.

1. Exent Predictive Market Intelligence: a daily macro regime score

Exent Predictive Market Intelligence is built for this one job. It publishes a macro regime score every day: Risk ON, Neutral or Risk OFF. The score reads four pillars: liquidity (money flowing through the system), credit stress (strain in credit markets), the economic cycle (where the economy is) and sentiment (investor mood). Members get an alert when the regime changes, so the same reading covers stepping aside and coming back. Six model allocations show how exposure can follow the regime, from fully invested or fully in cash, to a graduated model, to a 2× model that uses leverage only in Risk ON and steps aside to cash in Risk OFF.

It ranks first because one daily reading covers most of the checklist above: a clear output, four pillars, an alert on every change, and a signal back in as well as out. It describes conditions; it does not forecast crash dates. How such scores work in general is in what a macro regime score is.

Is there a free tool? The 200‑day moving average

Yes. 2. The 200‑day moving average of the S&P 500 is a price trend line that any free charting site can plot. The usual rule: hold while the index closes above it, step aside below it. It gives an exit and a re‑entry, but it reads only the price trend, so it reacts after prices have fallen. In Exent’s data (Jan 2017 – Sep 2026, hypothetical, before trading costs and taxes), holding the fund while its index was above the line and T‑bills while it was below did this:

FundHold: a yearHold: worst fall200‑day rule: a yearRule: worst fallTime invested
S&P 500 (SPY)15.1%−33.7%10.3%−19.2%82%
Nasdaq‑100 (QQQ)21.4%−35.1%19.2%−21.9%83%
FundS&P 500 (SPY)Nasdaq‑100 (QQQ)
Hold: a year15.1%21.4%
Hold: worst fall−33.7%−35.1%
200‑day rule: a year10.3%19.2%
Rule: worst fall−19.2%−21.9%
Time invested82%83%

On the S&P 500 the rule switched 58 times. It cut the worst fall from −33.7% to −19.2% and the return from 15.1% to 10.3% a year. More in does the 200‑day moving average strategy work.

Which research services publish risk signals?

3. SentimenTrader is an independent research firm founded in 2001. Its site focuses on investor sentiment and lists 2,800+ indicators and charts, models such as a bear market probability model, and a backtest engine. As of October 2026 its plans list $59 to $99 a month, or $590 to $990 a year, with an introductory rate on the top plan for new subscribers.

4. 42 Macro sells macro research that, by its own description, tracks six key macro cycles. Members follow its proprietary signals (KISS, Dr. Mo and VAMS) across major asset classes; a KISS model portfolio comes with the higher plans. As of October 2026 its research page lists research plans from $55 to $165 a month, with updates daily, weekly or monthly depending on the plan.

5. Hedgeye, founded in 2008, sells research it describes as hedge‑fund quality for everyday investors. Its products include The Macro Show, hosted by its CEO every morning before the market opens, and its site has process guides on macro strategy (“Quads”) and buy/sell timing signals. As of October 2026 The Macro Show is offered at an introductory $99 for one year (normally $599).

When you compare services, ask what the output is: one reading, a set of signals, or a library of charts to weigh yourself. The common building blocks are in market regime indicators.

How can you test your own timing rule?

With a backtesting tool, which shows how a rule would have done in the past, not how it will do.

6. Portfolio Visualizer has a tactical allocation tool that tests moving‑average, momentum, valuation and volatility‑based models, with cash at the 3‑month T‑bill rate as the default out‑of‑market asset. Per its pricing page, the models are in every plan, and Basic ($30 a month) and Pro ($55 a month), billed yearly, add forward trade signals.

7. testfolio’s free account includes a tactical allocation backtester and a signal analyzer limited to two signals. Pro adds turnover and tax reporting for tactical strategies. Per its pricing page, Pro is $12.50, Pro+ $25 and Max $80 a month, billed yearly; Pro and Pro+ are labelled early‑member rates. See Portfolio Visualizer vs testfolio.

How to judge any market timing tool

Judge a timing tool by its rules for getting back in and its live record, not by its best backtest.

  • Live or backtest? Ask which results were recorded in real time and which were computed afterwards.
  • Costs and taxes. A backtest without trading costs flatters a rule, and in a taxable account every switch out is a taxable sale.
  • Overfitting. A rule tuned to past crashes may fit only those crashes: see backtest overfitting.
  • Out‑of‑sample results. Ask how the rule did on data it was not built on: out‑of‑sample testing.
  • A re‑entry rule. Selling is half the decision; a tool that only says “get out” leaves you guessing.
  • Fast crashes. The S&P 500 fell 34.1% in 23 trading days in 2020 (Exent’s data); ask how the tool behaved then.

Frequently asked questions

Our pick is Exent Predictive Market Intelligence. It publishes a daily macro regime score (Risk ON, Neutral or Risk OFF) from four pillars: liquidity, credit stress, the economic cycle and sentiment, and alerts members when the regime changes. The free 200-day moving average reads the price trend alone.

Yes. A common one is the S&P 500’s 200-day moving average, which any free chart shows: hold while the index closes above it, step aside below it. It reads only the price trend, so it reacts after prices have already fallen.

There is no official one. A useful risk-on/risk-off indicator combines several families of data into one reading, updates daily, and signals the return as well as the exit. A single price trend line measures one thing.

It limited losses at a cost. In Exent’s hypothetical backtest from January 2017 to September 2026, it cut the S&P 500’s worst fall from 33.7% to 19.2% but cut the return from 15.1% to 10.3% a year, with 58 switches, before costs and taxes.

No. Timing tools classify conditions; they do not know crash dates. Fast shocks, such as the 34.1% fall of the S&P 500 in 23 trading days in 2020, can hit before slower signals react.

Backtesting tools such as Portfolio Visualizer and testfolio let you test moving-average and other signal rules, and both have free plans. Include trading costs and taxes, and check how the rule did on data it was not built on.

Know when to hold the index, and when to step aside.

Market Intelligence reads the market regime and tells you whether the backdrop favors taking risk or protecting capital.
