How Do I Use an AI Stock Screener?

Type what you are looking for in plain English and get the filters built for you. How natural‑language screening works, what it can and cannot filter, and how to check the result.

Key takeaways

  • Type a request such as “US large-cap tech stocks with a P/E under 30”. The AI turns it into ordinary screener filters, which you can see and edit before trusting the list.
  • Exent’s screener can filter by sector, region, market cap, valuation, beta, drawdown, momentum, analyst price-target upside and Exent’s holding labels.
  • The AI only builds filters. The results come from the same data as a manual screen, so they are repeatable.
  • A screen is a starting list for research, not a buy list.

How do I use an AI stock screener?

  1. Describe the stocks you want in one sentence, with numbers where you have them.
  2. Read the filters it built. Every condition should match what you meant. Fix any that do not.
  3. Tighten or loosen one filter at a time and watch the result count.
  4. Sort by the measure you care most about.
  5. Save the screen so you can rerun the same rules later.

The second step is the one people skip. An AI screener is only as good as its translation of your sentence, so the filters, not the sentence, are what you are really running.

A worked example

Request: “US large-cap tech stocks with P/E under 30 and beta below 1.2, highest analyst upside first.” Exent builds:

Part of the sentenceFilter applied
stocksAsset type: stocks only (no ETFs)
USExchange: US exchanges
techSector: Technology
large-capMarket cap: $10 billion or more
P/E under 30P/E: maximum 30
beta below 1.2Beta: maximum 1.2
highest analyst upside firstOnly stocks with positive median analyst upside, sorted by it, highest first

The filters appear as chips above the results. Remove one, change a number, or add a filter by hand and the list updates. Read more about what a price target is, and how often targets are right, in price target and are analyst price targets accurate?

What can Exent’s screener filter on?

How does it read words like “small cap” or “European”?

Size words map to fixed market-cap bands:

WordMarket cap
Nano capUnder $50 million
Micro cap$50 million – $300 million
Small cap$300 million – $2 billion
Mid cap$2 billion – $10 billion
Large cap$10 billion and up
Mega capOver $200 billion

Regions such as “US”, “European”, “Asian” or “Latin American” become the full list of exchanges in that region. Saying “stocks” keeps ETFs out unless you ask for them.

What can’t an AI screener do?

  • Relative valuation against peers (for example “cheaper than its peers on P/E”) is not available as a screen; use absolute P/E or EV/EBITDA, or compare peers on a stock’s own page.
  • It only builds filters. Anything that is not a stock filter, such as “which should I buy?”, returns no filters.
  • Each plain-English search uses one AI credit from the balance shown in the screener; editing filters by hand does not.
  • It cannot judge quality or tell you what to own. Check the businesses behind the list yourself.

What should I do with the results?

Treat the list as research candidates. Exent lets you save the screen as a preset and save the results as a portfolio, which you can then run through Portfolio Analysis to see how the names move together and how they behaved in past crashes. The screener sits in Stocks Radar next to analyst rankings and Gems, the stocks where several top‑rated analysts agree. For how analysts are rated, see how to follow Wall Street analysts.

Frequently asked questions

Type what you want in one plain-English sentence, check the filters the AI builds, adjust any that are wrong, then sort and save the screen.

It is faster to set up, not smarter. The results come from the same data and filters you could set by hand, so the quality depends on checking the filters.

No. It narrows a universe to stocks that match your rules. Deciding what to own still needs your own research.
