Exent Research · Market Note

The average Wall Street analyst is a coin flip. We found the 26 who are not.

We tracked thousands of analysts by their real record. Most are noise. A small group is consistently right, and they are rating stocks today.

Hit rate distribution across 4,592 tracked analysts

Most analysts cluster near a 50–60% hit rate. Only 26 clear an 80% hit rate — the emerald bars on the right.

Wall Street issues thousands of ratings a year. They arrive with confidence, a price target, and a firm's name attached. So we checked them.

Exent tracked every analyst we could, across thousands of rated calls, and scored each one on a single measure: how often the stock actually reached the target.

The result is uncomfortable.

The average analyst with a real track record is right 52.7% of the time. The median is 54.1%. In plain terms, the typical Wall Street analyst is a coin flip.

The few who are not.

Out of everyone we track, only 26 analysts clear an 80% hit rate. As a group, they are right roughly 86% of the time.

The bar climbs fast from there. Just 12 clear 85%. Only 6 clear 90%.

These are not the loudest names or the biggest firms. They are the ones whose ratings, tracked over years, actually landed. And almost no self-directed investor has ever seen the list.
